A
2 termsAn appeal is the formal process to challenge a denied insurance claim or coverage decision. Federal law grants a right to at least one internal appeal reviewed by the insurer and, upon a second denial, an external review by an independent third party.
Amortization is the schedule of paying off a loan through fixed periodic payments allocated between principal and interest. Early payments are interest-heavy; later payments are principal-heavy. A 30-year mortgage may take 18 years before principal exceeds interest each month.

7 termsCoinsurance is the percentage of a covered medical bill the member owes after meeting the deductible. Common splits are 80/20 or 70/30, meaning the insurer pays the larger share and the member pays the rest until the annual out-of-pocket maximum is reached.
A copay is a flat, predictable fee the member pays at the time of service — typically $10 to $60 for a primary care visit and $30 to $90 for a specialist. Copays generally do not count toward the deductible but do count toward the annual out-of-pocket maximum.
COBRA is a federal law that lets qualified employees and family members keep their employer group health plan for up to 18 months (36 in some cases) after job loss, reduced hours or other qualifying events. Members pay the full premium plus a 2% administrative surcharge.
A contingency fee is a legal fee arrangement in which the attorney is paid only if the client wins or settles the case. The fee is a pre-agreed percentage — typically 33% to 40% — of the recovery, plus reimbursement of case expenses.
Closing costs are the fees paid at the completion of a real estate transaction, typically 2% to 5% of the purchase price. They include lender origination, appraisal, title insurance, recording fees, prepaid taxes and insurance escrow.
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace the policyholder's own vehicle after a crash with another vehicle or object, regardless of fault. It is optional in every state but required by lenders on financed vehicles.
Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your vehicle from non-collision events: theft, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding and animal strikes. Like collision, it is optional in every state but typically required by lenders.
D
2 termsA deductible is the fixed dollar amount a policyholder must pay out of pocket for covered services before the insurer begins to share costs. Deductibles apply annually and reset each plan year. Preventive care, certain drugs and telehealth visits are often excluded from the deductible.
A deposition is sworn out-of-court testimony taken during discovery, transcribed by a court reporter and often video-recorded. Attorneys use depositions to lock in witness statements, evaluate credibility and gather admissions that can be used later at trial.
E
2 termsAn EPO is a hybrid managed-care plan that combines the lower premiums of an HMO with the no-referral freedom of a PPO. Members can see any specialist inside the contracted network without a gatekeeper, but out-of-network care is not covered except in emergencies.
Escrow is a neutral third-party account that holds funds or documents during a real estate transaction until all closing conditions are met. Post-closing, an escrow account may also collect monthly property tax and insurance payments alongside the mortgage.
F
3 termsAn FSA is an employer-sponsored account funded with pre-tax salary deferrals to pay for eligible medical or dependent-care expenses. Unlike an HSA, an FSA is generally use-it-or-lose-it — unused funds forfeit at year-end, subject to limited carryover or grace-period rules.
A formulary is the tiered list of prescription drugs an insurer covers, with each tier setting a different copay or coinsurance. Non-formulary drugs are either uncovered or require a formal exception request supported by physician documentation of medical necessity.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the U.S. Department of Education form that determines eligibility for federal grants, work-study and student loans. States and colleges also use it to award their own aid. It opens each October for the following academic year.
H
3 termsAn HMO is a managed-care health insurance plan that requires members to receive covered services from a contracted provider network, usually coordinated through a primary care physician (PCP) who issues referrals for specialists. In exchange for the tighter network, HMOs typically charge lower premiums and predictable copays.
An HDHP is a health plan with a deductible of at least $1,650 for individuals or $3,300 for families in 2026, paired with a tax-advantaged Health Savings Account (HSA). HDHPs trade higher upfront medical costs for lower premiums and triple-tax-free HSA savings.
An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account tied to a High-Deductible Health Plan. Contributions are deductible, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused funds roll over indefinitely and belong to the account holder, not the employer.

8 termsA PPO is a health plan that lets members see any licensed provider without a referral, paying less when they use the insurer's preferred network and more when they go outside it. PPOs trade higher premiums and deductibles for the broadest choice of doctors and hospitals in U.S. private insurance.
Prior authorization is the insurer's approval requirement before a specific medication, procedure or hospital admission will be covered. The provider must submit clinical justification and receive a formal approval number, or the claim will be denied even for medically necessary care.
A premium is the recurring payment — monthly, quarterly or annual — the policyholder makes to keep an insurance policy active. Miss enough premiums and the insurer can lapse coverage, ending all claim rights.
The policy limit is the maximum dollar amount an insurer will pay on a covered claim. Limits are set per occurrence, per person or as an aggregate over the policy term, and losses above the limit are the policyholder's responsibility.
A plaintiff is the person or entity that initiates a civil lawsuit by filing a complaint. The plaintiff carries the burden of proof — by a preponderance of the evidence in most civil cases — to establish liability and damages against the defendant.
PMI is insurance the borrower pays to protect the lender when the down payment is less than 20% on a conventional mortgage. PMI usually costs 0.3% to 1.5% of the loan amount per year and must be canceled once the loan balance reaches 78% of the original value.
The Pell Grant is federal, need-based aid for undergraduate students that does not have to be repaid. Award amounts are set annually by Congress — the 2026-27 maximum is $7,395 — and depend on the FAFSA-derived Student Aid Index, cost of attendance and enrollment intensity.
PSLF is a federal program that forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after the borrower makes 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a government or qualifying nonprofit employer. Forgiveness under PSLF is not taxable federally.
S
3 termsA statute of limitations is the legal deadline for filing a lawsuit. It varies by state and by claim type — often two years for personal injury, three to six for contract disputes, and just months for certain employment or governmental claims. Missing it is nearly always fatal to the case.
The Student Aid Index replaced the Expected Family Contribution on the FAFSA. It is a formula-derived number — potentially as low as -$1,500 — that colleges use to measure financial need. Lower SAI means more federal need-based aid.
A Direct Subsidized Loan is a federal undergraduate loan awarded on need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while the student is enrolled at least half-time, during the six-month grace period, and during deferment.
T
2 termsA tort is a civil wrong — negligent or intentional — that causes another person harm and gives rise to a claim for damages. Torts include car accidents, medical malpractice, defamation and product liability, and are distinct from criminal offenses.
Title insurance protects the buyer and lender against defects in a property's chain of ownership — undisclosed liens, forgery, missing heirs — that could threaten title after closing. It is a one-time premium paid at closing, not an ongoing cost.

461 termsTerm life insurance is a policy that pays a tax-free death benefit if the insured dies within a fixed period, typically 10, 20 or 30 years. Premiums stay level for the term, coverage ends when the term expires, and no cash value accumulates, making it the lowest-cost way to protect income during working years.
Whole life insurance is a permanent policy that combines a guaranteed death benefit with a tax-deferred cash value that grows at a contractual rate. Premiums stay level for life, the policy never expires as long as premiums are paid, and the cash value can be borrowed against or surrendered.
Universal life insurance is flexible permanent coverage that lets the policyholder adjust premium payments and death benefits over time. Cash value grows based on a declared interest rate or an index, and internal charges cover the cost of insurance monthly, giving both lifelong protection and tax-deferred savings.
An umbrella insurance policy is personal liability coverage that pays claims above the limits of your auto, homeowners or boat policy. It typically starts at $1 million, costs $150–$300 per year, and shields personal assets from lawsuits arising from accidents, injuries or defamation claims.
Renters insurance is a low-cost policy that protects a tenant's personal property, liability exposure and additional living expenses if the rental unit becomes uninhabitable. It covers theft, fire, vandalism and certain water damage, and typically runs $12–$25 per month for $30,000 in personal property coverage.
Homeowners insurance is a package policy covering the dwelling, other structures, personal property, liability and loss-of-use expenses. Mortgage lenders require it, and standard HO-3 forms cover open-perils damage to the home while listing named perils for personal property.
Flood insurance is a separate policy — usually issued through the National Flood Insurance Program — that covers rising-water damage excluded from standard homeowners insurance. It is required for federally backed mortgages in high-risk flood zones and averages around $700 a year nationally.
Gap insurance pays the difference between what you owe on an auto loan or lease and what the car is worth if it is totaled or stolen. It matters most in the first two to three years of ownership, when depreciation typically leaves borrowers underwater on the loan.
Full coverage car insurance is not a single product but a combination of liability, collision and comprehensive coverage. Lenders require it on financed vehicles because it repairs or replaces the car after most accidents, thefts or weather events, not just injuries and damage caused to others.
Liability-only car insurance is the minimum coverage required by most states. It pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others but does not repair your own vehicle. It suits older, paid-off cars where the repair cost is close to the vehicle's market value.
Uninsured motorist coverage pays your medical bills, lost wages and pain-and-suffering when an at-fault driver has no insurance. Roughly 14% of U.S. drivers are uninsured, and this coverage — often bundled with underinsured motorist — is required or offered in nearly every state.
Comprehensive auto coverage pays for non-collision damage to your vehicle, including theft, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding and animal strikes. It carries a separate deductible from collision and is required by lenders on any financed or leased vehicle.
Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an impact with another car or object, regardless of fault. Deductibles typically range from $250 to $1,000, and dropping this coverage on cars worth under $3,000 is a common way to lower premiums.
SR-22 is not a policy but a certificate of financial responsibility that your insurer files with the state to prove you carry minimum liability coverage. States require it after DUIs, at-fault accidents without insurance or license reinstatement, and the filing usually stays in place for three years.
Long-term care insurance pays for extended custodial and skilled nursing services in facilities or at home when the insured cannot perform two or more activities of daily living. Median 2026 nursing home cost is over $110,000 per year, and Medicare does not cover most of it.
Disability income insurance replaces 50–70% of earned income when an illness or injury prevents work. Short-term policies pay for 3–12 months; long-term policies can pay until age 65 or 67. It is one of the most under-purchased financial protections among U.S. workers.
Pet insurance reimburses veterinary expenses for accidents and illnesses, and optionally for wellness care. Plans work on a deductible-and-coinsurance model similar to human health insurance, and premiums vary widely by species, breed, age and location — averaging $50 per month for dogs in 2026.
Travel insurance is a short-term policy that reimburses non-refundable trip costs, emergency medical care abroad, evacuation, baggage loss and travel delays. Comprehensive plans typically cost 4–10% of the trip's prepaid amount and are essential for international itineraries where U.S. health plans do not follow.
Business interruption insurance replaces lost income and covers ongoing expenses when a covered peril forces a business to close temporarily. It is typically a rider on a commercial property policy, requires a physical damage trigger, and is essential for small businesses without months of cash reserves.
Cyber liability insurance covers costs from data breaches, ransomware attacks, business email compromise and regulatory fines. Coverage typically includes forensics, customer notification, credit monitoring, extortion payments and defense costs, and is now considered essential for any business that stores customer data.
Medicare Part A is the federal hospital insurance program that covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health services. Most beneficiaries pay no premium because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
Medicare Part B is the outpatient medical insurance portion of original Medicare. It covers doctor visits, preventive services, durable medical equipment and outpatient surgery, with a standard 2026 monthly premium and a 20% coinsurance after the annual deductible.
Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is a private plan that bundles Part A, Part B and usually Part D into one policy. Plans often include dental, vision and fitness benefits, but they use provider networks and require prior authorization for many services.
Medicare Part D is optional outpatient prescription drug coverage sold by private insurers. Plans use tiered formularies with a $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cap in 2026, and enrollees who delay signing up without other creditable coverage face a permanent late-enrollment penalty.
Medigap is standardized supplemental insurance sold by private carriers that pays some or all of original Medicare's copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Plans are labeled by letter (Plan G and Plan N are the most popular in 2026), and benefits are identical across insurers.
Medicaid eligibility depends on income, household size, disability and, in expansion states, adult income up to 138% of the federal poverty level. It provides comprehensive medical coverage — including long-term care — with little or no cost sharing for qualifying residents.
CHIP, the Children's Health Insurance Program, provides low-cost or free comprehensive coverage for children in families that earn too much for Medicaid but cannot afford private plans. Benefits include routine checkups, vaccinations, dental, vision and hospital services.
A health insurance premium is the monthly amount you pay to keep coverage in force, separate from any cost-sharing at the point of care. Employer plans typically split premiums with the worker; marketplace shoppers may qualify for premium tax credits that lower the net cost.
A Special Enrollment Period lets you buy or change marketplace coverage outside open enrollment after a qualifying life event — marriage, birth, job loss, moving or losing other coverage. Most SEPs last 60 days from the event date.
Open enrollment for health insurance is the yearly window when anyone can enroll in or change a marketplace plan without needing a qualifying life event. For 2026 coverage on healthcare.gov, it runs November 1 through January 15 in most states.
A formulary is the list of prescription drugs an insurance plan covers, organized into tiers that determine cost sharing. Generic drugs sit on the lowest tier; specialty biologics sit on the highest. Non-formulary drugs are either not covered or require exception requests.
Prior authorization is an insurer's requirement that a provider get approval before performing certain services or prescribing specific drugs. Without it, the claim is denied. Federal rules in 2026 shortened response times for Medicare Advantage plans to 72 hours for urgent care.
A provider network is the set of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies an insurer contracts with at negotiated rates. Staying in-network dramatically lowers cost sharing; going out-of-network can trigger balance billing except in emergencies protected by the No Surprises Act.
A referral is written authorization from a primary care physician allowing the patient to see a specialist under an HMO or point-of-service plan. Without a valid referral, the specialist visit is treated as out-of-network and often not covered.
COBRA continuation coverage lets former employees keep group health insurance for up to 18 months after job loss, at 102% of the full premium. It preserves the same doctors and deductible progress but is often expensive relative to marketplace plans with subsidies.
A lien on a car title is a legal claim held by the lender that financed the vehicle. The lien stays on the title until the loan is paid off, at which point the lender releases it and the borrower receives a clean title.
Vehicle depreciation is the loss of a car's market value over time, driven by mileage, condition and model demand. New cars typically lose 20% in year one and roughly 60% by year five, which is why gap insurance matters most during early ownership.
A certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle is a used car that meets manufacturer age and mileage limits and passes a multi-point inspection. CPO cars come with an extended factory-backed warranty and cost more than an equivalent private-party used car.
A salvage title is issued when an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss after damage exceeding a state threshold. Salvage-titled cars can be rebuilt and re-titled but usually sell for 20–40% less than clean-title equivalents and can be difficult to finance or insure.
A rebuilt title is issued after a salvage vehicle is repaired and passes a state inspection confirming roadworthiness. It permanently marks the car's history, may limit resale value and often disqualifies the vehicle from comprehensive or collision insurance with major carriers.
A lemon law buyback occurs when a manufacturer repurchases a defective new vehicle under state lemon laws after unsuccessful repair attempts. The car receives a permanent lemon-law title branding, and consumers typically recover the purchase price minus a usage offset.
An auto loan APR is the annualized cost of borrowing, including interest and lender fees. Rates depend on credit score, loan term, vehicle age and down payment. In 2026, prime borrowers see rates around 6.5% while subprime borrowers can exceed 18%.
Auto loan refinancing replaces an existing car loan with a new one — usually to secure a lower rate, shorter term or reduced monthly payment. It works best when credit scores have improved by 50+ points or interest rates have fallen since the original purchase.
A vehicle extended warranty, technically a service contract, pays for covered mechanical repairs after the factory warranty expires. Coverage varies from powertrain-only to exclusionary bumper-to-bumper, and dealer-sold contracts are usually negotiable by hundreds or thousands of dollars.
A vehicle recall is a manufacturer or NHTSA-mandated repair to correct a safety defect or non-compliance with federal standards. Repairs are free to the owner regardless of vehicle age, and the current recall status of any VIN can be checked on the NHTSA website.
An FHA loan is a mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration that allows down payments as low as 3.5% for borrowers with credit scores of 580 or higher. It carries upfront and monthly mortgage insurance premiums and has looser debt-to-income limits than conventional loans.
A VA home loan is a mortgage guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs for eligible veterans, active-duty service members and surviving spouses. It offers zero down payment, no monthly mortgage insurance and competitive interest rates capped by federal regulation.
A USDA Rural Development loan is a zero-down mortgage backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for low- and moderate-income buyers in eligible rural and suburban areas. Income limits vary by county, and the program is one of the last true 100% financing options.
Private mortgage insurance, or PMI, is an insurance policy conventional lenders require when a borrower puts less than 20% down. It protects the lender from default, costs 0.3–1.5% of the loan yearly, and drops off automatically at 78% loan-to-value under federal law.
A mortgage escrow account is a lender-managed savings account that collects a portion of each mortgage payment to cover property taxes and homeowners insurance premiums as they come due. Escrow analyses run yearly to adjust for tax or insurance changes.
A home appraisal is an independent valuation performed by a licensed appraiser to confirm a property's market value before a lender finances the purchase or refinance. Low appraisals can force renegotiation, larger down payments or a canceled contract.
A home inspection contingency is a purchase-agreement clause giving the buyer the right to inspect the property and cancel or renegotiate based on findings. It typically lasts 5–14 days and is one of the most important buyer protections in a real estate transaction.
Title insurance is a one-time policy protecting owners and lenders against losses from defects in the property's ownership history — unpaid liens, forged deeds or missed heirs. Lenders always require a lender's policy; owners can add a separate owner's policy at closing.
A home equity line of credit (HELOC) is a revolving loan secured by your home equity, with a draw period and then a repayment period. Interest is typically variable, and interest may be tax-deductible when used for substantial home improvements.
A property tax assessment is the value a local assessor assigns to real estate to calculate annual property taxes. Owners can appeal assessments they believe are inflated, and successful appeals often reduce annual bills by hundreds or thousands of dollars.
A personal injury lawyer represents people harmed by another party's negligence — car crashes, slips, medical errors or defective products. Most work on contingency, taking 33–40% of the recovery, and cover litigation costs upfront so injured clients pay nothing out of pocket.
Contingency fee representation is a legal arrangement in which the attorney is paid only if the client wins or settles the case, taking a percentage of the recovery. It gives injured plaintiffs access to counsel without upfront fees and aligns attorney and client interests.
A statute of limitations is a state-law deadline for filing a civil claim. Personal injury deadlines commonly range from one to six years, and missing the cutoff typically bars the claim entirely — no matter how strong the evidence.
Wrongful termination is an at-will employee's firing that violates a specific statute, contract or public policy — for example, retaliation, discrimination or refusal to commit an illegal act. Damages can include back pay, front pay, emotional distress and attorney's fees.
Workers compensation is a state-mandated insurance program that pays medical bills and partial wage replacement to employees injured on the job, regardless of fault. In exchange, employees generally give up the right to sue their employer directly.
Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a liquidation proceeding that discharges most unsecured debts — credit cards, medical bills, personal loans — within four to six months. Filers must pass a means test based on household income relative to their state's median.
Chapter 13 bankruptcy reorganizes debts into a three- to five-year court-supervised repayment plan while letting the filer keep secured property like a home or car. It suits wage earners with regular income who want to stop foreclosure or catch up on mortgage arrears.
A power of attorney is a written document that authorizes another person — the agent — to act on your behalf in financial, medical or legal matters. Durable powers stay in force if you become incapacitated; springing powers activate only after incapacity.
A living trust is a legal arrangement in which you transfer assets to a trust during your lifetime, avoiding probate at death. You retain full control as trustee while alive, and a successor trustee distributes assets to beneficiaries privately after death.
Probate court is the state court that supervises the transfer of a deceased person's assets, validates wills and settles creditor claims. Probate can take 6–18 months and cost 3–7% of the estate, which is why many families use trusts to bypass it.
A class action lawsuit is a case in which one or more plaintiffs sue on behalf of a group with similar claims — often defective products, wage violations or data breaches. It concentrates litigation power against large defendants and delivers proportionate recoveries to each class member.
Discovery is the pretrial exchange of evidence between parties through interrogatories, document requests, depositions and subpoenas. It typically consumes the largest share of litigation time and cost and often exposes the strengths and weaknesses that drive settlement.
A deposition is sworn out-of-court testimony recorded by a court reporter and used to preserve evidence, lock in a witness's story and evaluate credibility before trial. Deposition transcripts can be introduced later to impeach conflicting trial testimony.
A contingency retainer agreement is the written contract that sets the attorney's fee percentage, cost advances and settlement authority in a contingency case. Bar rules require it to be signed by the client before representation begins.
Punitive damages are money awarded to punish a defendant for particularly egregious or malicious conduct and to deter similar behavior. They are separate from compensatory damages, subject to constitutional limits, and available only when clear and convincing evidence supports the finding.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the U.S. government form that determines a student's eligibility for federal grants, loans and work-study, and is used by most states and colleges to award their own aid. Filing early each year usually maximizes aid.
The Student Aid Index (SAI) replaced the Expected Family Contribution on the FAFSA. It measures a family's financial strength for federal aid purposes and can now be negative, expanding Pell Grant eligibility for the lowest-income households.
A federal Direct Subsidized loan is a need-based undergraduate student loan on which the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while the borrower is enrolled at least half-time and during grace and deferment periods. It carries the lowest cost of any federal student loan.
A federal Direct Unsubsidized loan is available to undergraduate and graduate students regardless of financial need. Interest accrues from disbursement, and unpaid interest capitalizes at repayment, making early interest-only payments a smart way to reduce total cost.
A Parent PLUS loan is a federal loan a parent can take out to help pay their dependent undergraduate child's education costs. It carries higher interest rates than student loans, requires a modest credit review and offers Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility.
A Graduate PLUS loan is a federal loan graduate and professional students can use to cover education costs beyond Direct Unsubsidized limits. It has fixed rates, income-driven repayment access and forgiveness eligibility, but is more expensive than most other federal loans.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) cancels the remaining balance on Direct federal student loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full time for a government or 501(c)(3) nonprofit employer. Payments must be made under an income-driven repayment plan.
Income-driven repayment (IDR) sets a federal student loan monthly payment based on discretionary income and family size, rather than balance. Plans include IBR and PAYE, with any remaining balance forgiven after 20 or 25 years depending on the plan and loan type.
Student loan deferment temporarily postpones federal loan payments during qualifying periods — school enrollment, unemployment, economic hardship or military service. On subsidized loans, interest does not accrue during deferment; on unsubsidized loans, it does.
Student loan forbearance pauses federal student loan payments for up to 12 months at a time. Interest continues to accrue on all loan types and can capitalize when forbearance ends, so income-driven repayment is usually a cheaper alternative when eligible.
A 529 savings plan is a state-sponsored, tax-advantaged investment account for qualified education expenses. Contributions grow tax-deferred, withdrawals for tuition and fees are federal tax-free, and most states offer income-tax deductions for residents who contribute.
A Pell Grant is federal need-based aid awarded to low-income undergraduates that does not have to be repaid. Maximum awards adjust annually for inflation, and 2024 reforms expanded eligibility to many part-time and previously incarcerated students.
Cost of attendance (COA) is a college's total estimated annual budget for a student, including tuition, fees, room and board, books, transportation and personal expenses. It sets the ceiling on the amount of financial aid a student can receive.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC) was the pre-2024 measure of a family's ability to pay for college on the FAFSA. It was replaced by the Student Aid Index (SAI), which uses a similar methodology but expands eligibility for the lowest-income households.
Student loan refinancing replaces existing federal or private student loans with a new private loan, usually to secure a lower interest rate or shorter term. Refinancing federal loans permanently forfeits access to income-driven repayment and forgiveness programs.
Estate planning is the process of arranging how your assets, medical decisions and dependents will be handled in the event of incapacity or death. Core documents include a will, powers of attorney, healthcare directive and, often, a revocable living trust.
A last will and testament is a legal document that directs how your property is distributed at death, names guardians for minor children and appoints an executor. Wills must be signed and witnessed under state law to be valid and admissible to probate.
A living will is an advance directive stating which life-sustaining treatments you accept or refuse if you become terminally ill or permanently unconscious. It works with a healthcare power of attorney, which names someone to make medical decisions when you cannot.
Mortgage pre-approval is a conditional lender commitment that specifies a maximum loan amount, rate range and terms based on verified income, assets and credit. It strengthens purchase offers and generally lasts 60 to 90 days.
Debt-to-income (DTI) ratio is your total monthly debt payments divided by gross monthly income, expressed as a percentage. Most conventional mortgage programs cap DTI at 43–50%, and lower ratios generally qualify for better interest rates.
Loan-to-value (LTV) is the mortgage balance divided by the appraised property value. Lower LTVs reduce lender risk, unlock better rates and eliminate private mortgage insurance once the LTV drops to 78–80% on conventional loans.
A fixed-rate mortgage locks the interest rate for the entire loan term, most commonly 15 or 30 years. Principal and interest payments never change, making budgeting predictable and shielding borrowers from future rate increases.
An adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) starts with a fixed introductory rate for 3, 5, 7 or 10 years, then adjusts periodically based on an index plus margin. ARMs often carry lower initial rates but expose borrowers to future payment shock.
Comprehensive health insurance is a plan that covers the ten essential health benefits defined by the Affordable Care Act — preventive care, hospitalization, maternity, mental health, prescription drugs and more — without annual or lifetime dollar limits on those benefits.
A short-term health plan is temporary coverage designed to bridge gaps between comprehensive plans. It is medically underwritten, can exclude pre-existing conditions and does not have to cover ACA essential benefits, so it is best used only for brief transitions.
A Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) is an employer-funded account that reimburses employees tax-free for eligible medical expenses and, with an ICHRA, individual health insurance premiums. Employers control funding limits, and unused amounts may or may not roll over.
A preferred auto insurance rate is the lowest tier a carrier offers, reserved for drivers with clean records, strong credit-based insurance scores and stable driving patterns. Preferred rates can run 20–40% below standard rates for similar coverage.
Non-owner car insurance is a liability-only policy for drivers who do not own a vehicle but occasionally drive borrowed or rented cars. It maintains continuous insurance history — critical for keeping future premiums low and satisfying SR-22 filings.
Rideshare insurance is auto coverage designed for drivers working for Uber, Lyft or delivery apps. It fills the gap between a personal policy — which typically excludes commercial use — and the rideshare company's contingent coverage, protecting drivers during app-on periods.
A no-fault state is one where drivers file bodily injury claims with their own auto insurer through Personal Injury Protection (PIP) regardless of who caused the crash. Lawsuits are limited to serious injuries meeting state thresholds.
Stated value car insurance lets the owner declare a vehicle's worth at policy inception, but the insurer still pays the lesser of that amount or actual cash value at claim time — a common source of collector-car disputes.
Agreed value car insurance guarantees a specific payout on a total loss, negotiated up front and documented in the policy. It's the gold standard for classic, exotic and modified vehicles that don't fit standard valuation books.
A diminished value claim recovers the loss in a vehicle's resale price after a repaired accident. Most states let third-party claimants pursue it against the at-fault driver's insurer.
New car replacement coverage pays for a brand-new vehicle of the same make and model if your car is totaled within the first year or two of ownership, instead of depreciated cash value.
Accident forgiveness is an auto insurance feature that prevents your first at-fault crash from raising your premium at renewal. Eligibility usually requires several years of clean driving with the same insurer.
A vanishing deductible reduces your collision or comprehensive deductible by a set amount for each year you drive without a claim, disappearing entirely after a defined stretch of safe driving.
Rental reimbursement coverage pays a daily rate for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim. Limits typically run $30 to $50 per day for up to 30 days.
Roadside assistance coverage pays for towing, jump-starts, lockout service, flat-tire changes and fuel delivery when your car is disabled. It's an inexpensive optional add-on to a standard auto policy.
Comprehensive auto coverage pays for non-collision damage — theft, vandalism, hail, floods, fire and animal strikes — after a deductible. Lenders generally require it on any financed vehicle.
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a crash with another car or object, regardless of fault, minus your deductible. It's usually required on financed and leased cars.
Liability-only car insurance covers injuries and property damage you cause to others but pays nothing for your own vehicle. It satisfies state minimums cheaply — a common choice for older paid-off cars.
A named driver policy covers only the specific individuals listed on the declarations page. Anyone else driving the car — even with permission — is uninsured, unlike a permissive-use standard policy.
A homeowners insurance deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in on a claim. Wind, hail and hurricane deductibles are often a percentage of the dwelling limit, not a flat dollar amount.
Actual cash value (ACV) coverage pays the replacement cost of damaged property minus depreciation. Standard homeowners policies default to ACV on personal belongings and roofs older than a set age.
Replacement cost coverage pays what it takes to buy new items of similar kind and quality, without depreciation. It's an endorsement on many homeowners policies for a modest premium bump.
Extended dwelling coverage adds 25% to 50% to your homeowners policy limit if rebuild costs exceed the stated dwelling amount after a covered total loss — critical protection when material prices spike.
Ordinance or law coverage pays the extra cost of rebuilding to current building codes after a covered loss, filling a gap standard homeowners policies exclude on older homes.
Loss of use coverage — also called Additional Living Expense — pays for temporary housing, meals and increased costs while your home is uninhabitable due to a covered claim, typically for 12 to 24 months.
A scheduled personal property endorsement adds itemized coverage for valuables like jewelry, watches, art and firearms, removing sub-limits and often covering mysterious disappearance.
